The Sandgrueb Foundation is dedicated to the holistic welfare of old and chronically-ill horses. The foundation operates a rehabilitation station and conducts comprehensive research on all aspects of the process.
Rehabilitation station:
This is where old or chronically-ill horses, as patients in need of intensive care, are provided with proper housing and veterinary care. Painful chronic arthritis, tendon injuries, hoof cancer, skin lesions such as sarcoid, melanoma or chronic lyphangitis (CPL) are some of the issues here treated. In addition to physical treatment, the psychological well-being of the horse is also important and considered in setting up a treatment programme.
Laboratory:
The central parasitology laboratory on site ensures the application of a selective deworming programme based on the Swiss model, thus supporting the work of Hungarian colleagues in the field of parasitology. This laboratory also analyses the compost produced at Szépalma, an analysis essential for the production of high quality compost.
Research Association:
Research and networking are at the heart of the Foundation. For 5 years now, the Foundation has been supporting international research into the welfare of older horses, carried out by experts from recognised institutions. Studies range from soil conservation, vegetation characteristics and hay quality to quality of life parameters and euthanasia decisions.
